Looking for Change

It is interesting to see how we all struggle with the same issues and how we are trying to find the right answers to make the changes we desire.  One of the things I've learned is how our body weight can fluctuate based on our water intake.  It can easily change 3-5 pounds during the day, so we have to try not to get discouraged when it looks like we've gained rather than lost weight.

One of the things I'm trying to get better at is understanding sugar.  If you're interested here is the link to a youtube video by Dr. Robert H. Lustig, basically a man who has studied obesity his whole career.  He teaches that a calorie is not a calorie.  Our bodies use and store fuel very differently depending on the quality of those calories.  If you eat a steady diet of high-sugar, low-fiber, low-quality protein and refined grains, you will jack up your insulin levels big-time.  That drives energy storage into fat cells. On the other hand if you reverse everything I just listed, your insulin response will be much lower and you will lose or maintain your weight.  Sugar is hidden very easily - did you know that in the food industry sugar has 56 different names, and it's also very high in most fruits.  Watching the video, reading his book and using a cookbook written by a lady following his principles, is helping me to eat good calories, not just less calories.  Hope these suggestions help someone out there.
