No Regrets

I did not reach all of the goals I had set for myself at the beginning of this challenge, but I do no regret participating.  I may regret a few of the prize videos I posted for all to see on the world wide web.  I have big plans to lose 20 more pounds before we move this summer.  I would love some company, so if anyone is interested in forming a group, a type of challenge, or has any ideas for keeping the momentum going, please share them with me.

Thanks to everyone that participated.  And a big thanks to those of you that made it all 12 weeks!  You are all awesome and I'm impressed with everyone that kept going!
I've enjoyed this challenge. It has helped me be accountable for what I am doing and to recognize the good and bad health choices I make.
Here's to continuing on after the challenge and getting all the extra weight off!

The End.

I was honestly excited to think that the challenge would go through Easter.  It does not!  MAD ME!! Now I really will have to control myself.  I don't know why I like Easter candy best! Maybe I will forget that it ended...Just Keep going...

Almost there

I can see the finish line, and I am so excited. I don't think I have stuck with a healthy eating program for this long ever, but I am diffinatly glad I did. Thanks for all of your hard work Stephanie, and everyone else for participating and making this so fun.

Thanks

Thanks for the good time and the great challenge, I can't wait to join you all for the next one!!

Spring Break

I'm thankful for the renewed energy this challenged has help me accomplish. It's been a good part of life. Thanks!

NSV

I haven't made much progress the last couple of weeks and was feeling slightly frustrated until It was almost 80 degrees here one day and I tried on a pair of shorts. These shorts fit all right in 2013 right before I got pregnant, but were a bit tight.  I put them on this time anticipating having to take them off again because they would be too tight. No. They were looser than ever! It was such a victory. I thought after having the last baby there was no way I was ever going to recover, get back to my old clothes, or ever be in shape again.  It works!

Viva Las Vegas...

Yes, I am celebrating the end of the challenge in all the wrong ways! :)  Ok, pretty much just eating all the wrong foods!  But, I am getting my exercise in!  Woop Woop!  Thanks for the great challenge everyone and lets go out strong!

Not three paragraphs

I love this blog.  I have no requirements just post!!
I have to blog on 3 discussion post a week at least 3 educated paragraphs per blog!!  YUCK!!
I love to post numbers.... lots of periods... CAPITAL LETTERS.... and color!!!!!
Not allowed on my other blogs!!

SO HERES TO HAVING A GREAT LAST TWO WEEKS!!!

Oh and somebody other than my grandma noticed I lost weight!! That is exciting because this is my second challenge.

Successful challenge, but i'm ready to be done

Some things I've learned from the challenge:
Mindful eating makes a big difference.
Eating out really piles on the calories.
I like to exercise!
Being accountable--to a group or even My Fitness Pal--helps keep me on track.
I can do it!
Thanks Stephanie for everything you've done to make this a fun challenge, especially your videos!!

Spring

I love spring! This week has been better, at least with my state of mind. I had a root canal on Tuesday, which sucked, but actually wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. I've been kind of slacking lately with my eating and just going through the motions to get points, so this week I decided to cut out sugar again as a last effort to lose a few more pounds before the final weigh in. I love these sunny days and getting out in the yard. I planted some seeds in leftover sour cream containers last weekend and last night, as I brought them indoors, I noticed a little tomato plant had sprouted. This morning a few basil seeds decided to poke their heads out. There is something so exciting about planting seeds and watching them grow, not unlike being a parent, but somewhat less complicated. ;-)

Like Stephanie, I haven't made as much progress during this challenge as I'd hoped I would in the beginning, but I am so glad I decided to participate. With some of the stressors introduced in the last 11 weeks I probably would have thrown in the towel if I wasn't part of this group. Thanks all for your support and your stories of successes and struggles. Making healthy choices is so much better when you're not alone!!

A Little Extra

At first when I read about the challenge this week I was unsure of what I should do for my 100 ish extra calories burned each day. Next week is my spring break and I was hoping to do a bunch of spring cleaning but I decided that this week as part of the challenge I would tackle a room or section of a room of my house each evening. It has been a little tricky to fit it in to my schedule but I it has been worth it. I have been throwing so much stuff out and it just feels so good. I also know that I will be thanking myself next week when I have way less cleaning to do and can do some fun things too!

Hard to Stay Focused

There is a lot going on in my life...big decisions being made and just a lot of stress.  And I know I'm not the only one!  Throughout this challenge members of our group have gotten engaged, had major health crises, have had spouses that have been gone for different reasons for long stretches of time.  Everyone is going through something!

It takes a lot of mental focus for me to lose weight.  I don't feel like I've been able to give 100% of my focus during this challenge and it shows on the scale.  I've lost a little, but not nearly as much as I had hoped at the beginning of this challenge.  I'm still really happy I completed these 12 weeks though.  I feel like the motivation to workout consistently and make better food decisions has helped keep me sane during this stressful time.  If it wasn't for this challenge, I probably would have ended up gaining weight the past 3 months.

I really want to continue with all of these habits, and work a little harder the next 3 months to continue reaching my goals and lose a bit more!  If any of you are interested in continuing or participating in some sort of challenge to kick off the summer, please let me know!

Thanks everyone for motivating me to be a little better!

And now to see the 2 winners for Week 10:

Hold strong!

Less than two weeks left! The last challenge I did was only like 6 weeks so I can deffinatly say I am excited to be done logging food and try to take what I have learned about my eating habits into a "non-logging" world. Thanks for all your hard work Stephanie! It's been real, it's been fun . . . but I'm ready to be done 😉.

Vacation Coming!

This challenge is going to be interesting for the next two weeks! I am not sure how to squeeze exercise in away from home but I am grateful for the eating out challenge haha! Have a good week everyone!

Back!

I went on a trip of a lifetime - to NYC with my best friend for a week! It was wonderful! I gained weight - almost quite this here ol' challenge - but had the TIME of my LIFE!! I'm back I will not quit. But I am no where near my original goal. Oh well! I'm healthier than I ever have been in my life. So I'm happy with that. I hope you're all having a great week!

Science Cake

I'm up late tonight working on finishing the decorations and cake for my son's "science" themed birthday party tomorrow!  Got this blog post in with 6 minutes left in the week.
So many of our celebrations and traditions are centered around food, what would a kid's birthday party be like without a cake?  I guess the important this is to practice moderation...and if you are going to splurge on a slice of cake, make it a good cake!

I'm not sure that an edible Erlenmeyer flask is going to be very tempting for me tomorrow, but I do know an almost 7 year old that will wake up in the morning and think it's awesome!

Well, I don't eat out a lot but the one week we get this challenge is when I was traveling and had to eat out! I have not done so well with my food while traveling, exercise has been good but I didn't always make the best choices with food. I am ready to get back to good choices the next couple weeks of this challenge

Tennis...for the first time

So I have been playing tennis for about 8 years now...I played for 4 years in high school but because of the cold weather we have taken up playing racket ball and have really enjoyed that. But this week has been so beautiful we decided to go play some tennis. Well it felt like I was playing for the first time and I am sure it looked that way too. First of all the racket felt huge compared to the racket ball racket and I am sure I looked like a crazy person swinging it around...I sure felt like one. I forgot how hard I needed to hit the ball so my hits either hit low on the net or they sailed out the fence...it was honestly very similar to the very first time I played tennis as a freshman....Then at church on sunday every one was like, "Oh I saw you and Steve out playing tennis..." Great now half the ward saw me like that!

Eating out

Well as fate would have it the one week that Ashley and I were presented the opportunity to eat out more than two days fell this week. Normally we eat out one time a week but this week we had family in town and some late night studying that would have made it easy to eat out...but we held strong, turned down some offers and did the challenge!

Ouch...I need to work on some skinny rules! The end.

Shoulda

Shoulda! I find it extremely appropriate that our family would deal with food poisoning from a fast food chicken wrap during this week. I had 5 out of 6 kids running in and out of bathrooms and missing 2 days of school. What a lesson on making decisions out of "convenience". It ended up being quite inconvenient to say the least! Shoulda stuck with the plan! Bright side...I'm down an addition 2 pounds after that fiasco. :)

My Bike!!

Yeah!  I got my bike out last week.  I can only ride it on the weekend but it's a fun change! Ten miles today.  I like to get fifteen by the end of the summer.

Eating at Home...

I decided to pick a personal goal this week, which is to go to Crossfit 5/7 days. Well let me just say that I instantly regretted it on Monday...hahah. Come Saturday we had a workout at 5AM and it lasted till 7:30 AM. That would not have been too bad but then the trainer decided we were doing the entire workout outside. Rexburg weather in the morning is not delightful, gratefully it is over! And I will think more logically about my personal goal next week :)

Tough couple of weeks

I am finding that my motivation is puttering out. It started so slowly I hardly noticed, but now I can tell I have little to no motivation to shed this weight. After so many weeks of not seeing changes on the scale, I guess that's what happens. I've also been more stressed lately. I'm having problems with my teeth and am learning that our dental coverage is not as great in reality as it looks on paper. When I get stressed out, I eat. My self-control goes out the window and I let myself have pretty much anything I want. I wouldn't go so far as to say I binge eat, but I do enough damage to negate the positive effects of my exercise and veggie intake. Also, with the pain from my teeth, it's been harder to eat foods that are crunchy or cold/hot, which leads me to eat extra carbs. Pasta, potatoes, and bread all go down nice and easy, not to mention they're the ultimate comfort foods. So I may not win any prizes this challenge, but I'm going to do my best to keep working during these last few weeks. I'll have to rely on my competitive spirit to get me through to the end!

Easter candy is the best!

Unless of course you are watching what you eat, then it is of the devil! I feel like throughout this competition I have gotten really good at the things that started out hard for me, like drinking water and getting enough sleep, but on the flip side the things that were really easy in the beginning, like exercise and personal goals, are really starting to fight back.

Week 9 Results and Prize Winner!

Week 10

I am leaving tomorrow morning for 5 days in San Antonio, so this week's group challenge is a no-go for me. I will have to eat out for every meal.  I'm stressing about how to do this responsibly and stay within my calorie goal.  If you have any good ideas, please let me know!  One good thing is that our hotel has a fitness center and I plan on using it!
This challenge has been great for me.  I have lost 10 pounds and am 1 pound away from my goal weight. My new goal will be maintaining my weight loss and increasing my strength and stamina, all without being obsessive about it.
It's the homestretch, fellow challengers.  Keep up the good work!!

Crossfit fun...

By fun I mean pain. I tried a new crossfit class this week and well... it reminded me of how out of shape I am ha. Happy Week 10 everyone!

Fun fun

This week I have played tennis. It's been a blast. It's a great work out. It builds muscle and gets you cardio at the same time!

guns, buns, and abs

I took a screen shot of a work out plan sometime ago and this weeks challenge got me to finally do it. I wanted to post a picture of it but I  can't  figure out how to do it off my phone, so ill just tell you about it. It is called 30 day guns, buns, and abs challenge. Each day you do a varying amount of  squats, push ups, and leg lift. we shall see how I feel about this by the end of the 30 days. Still in the it hurts phase and not quite to the it hurts but I love it stage.

Sydney Mills

This week for my new exercise I tried dodge ball. We did it in pe but it was new and super fun to play with my class mates! Hoping for another good week!
I tried the Kickboxing video that was posted on here and I really enjoyed it! It was definitely something new and different which is always good.

More Fun

I wanted to pick stuff that was more fun for my new exercises.  I have been going to the gym and pounding away on the treadmill, but I don't find that enjoyable enough to see myself doing it indefinitely.  So this week I went golfing (technically last week but the assignment had been made), and instead of riding in a cart I walked.  Then I went ice skating.  Then after work one night when I would typically eat a snack and watch TV I took one of my sons outside and we played catch for 30 minutes.  Then another evening after work (during the snacking/sitting portion) I went to the driving range for about an hour.

I realize that none of the activities (except the skating) will slim me down, but replacing an hour of inactivity with moderate activity that simultaneously distracts from food will contribute to a healthier lifestyle.  (My favorite challenge yet)

Walk away the pounds

I tried a friends Walk Away the Pounds video.  It was great. I used it twice for this past week. I would recommend it.

Oh the pain...but I shall endure!

I'm a whip! Actually, it's old injuries, too much weight and shin splints!  BUT I did do my "new" workout.  I took this challenge as doing something I haven't done thus far in the challenge... and I decided to move from the treadmill in my basement to being outside!  I totally pushed myself and went farther and longer than I thought I could! It felt sooooo awesome! But by the end of the week, it caught up to me.  Oh well!  I'm excited for this warm weather so I can do more outside!  It's been great to take the kids on walks this week and enjoy the sunshine!
 D&C 89:20
"And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint"

And any tips on the shin splints????  I can't stand them!

Something new, for me.

I chose to do an exercise that has been around since the beginning of time, but just not around much if my life. I jogged outside. Certainly not a difficult concept but difficult for me to get the courage to do it. This challenge gave me the courage. Twice I jogged in the morning just before daylight. Twice I jogged just after dark. If you can't tell, it's really not something I feel comfortable for the folks outside to see. It was nice. Not great, not mind blowing-it was just as the challenge requested: different.

Same place new exercise

We go to the gym a couple times a week and I always start by lifting weights. I do most of the arm machines but this week for the new exercise I decided to try all of the arm ones. I found one that I had never done before that was great for biceps and I want to add it into my routine.

New exercise

Steve and I go to the gym a couple times a week and I usually avoid most of the weight lifting machines...so this week I decided to try them all...well most of them. There were some that I liked and some that I didn't like and I decided that I am going to make the inner and outer thigh ones and the crunch one a part of my routine at the gym.

love new workouts

This week I tried the kickboxing workout that was posted and a fitness blender workout off you tube. It was a good variety of workouts in one, but fitness blender defiantly needs some music 😊 it is a full hour though so that's my kind of "one and done" haha
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ubT6qNnUmQw

P90X

I enjoy doing the P90X workout videos here and there. At times in my life I was doing these videos multiple times a week. Right now though, I have a gym membership and I often am there instead of my basement for my daily sweat. Well...this week for my new workout I popped in a P90X workout I have never done. I have my 3-4 favs and I rarely do anything other than those particulars. I was super sore! It was a bicep and back workout. Even though I don't have super heavy weights I have been feeling it! Thanks for the challenge Stephanie!

Turbo Jam

For my new workout this week I tried Turbo Jam. It combines kickboxing moves with the enthusiasm of Richard Simmons. Have you ever been to a zumba class where the teacher describes your workout as a party and people are whooping and hollering during their favorite parts of songs? If so then you can imagine Turbo Jam. It was more than a little cheesy, and I'm still deciding whether the cheese added to the entertainment value or not. In any case it was a pretty good workout. It was a little hard to follow the move combinations so I think I'd get a better calorie burn after doing it a couple times.

I also tried the Barre workout that Jenni posted and it was really good. I have a new appreciation for how seriously athletic ballerinas are. My glutes and hamstrings were killing me the next day!!

Tae Bo Tae boo

Okay, I tried a tae bo workout on youtube and let's just say it wasn't a success.  All that foot choreography had me 4 steps behind the whole time. LOL
The class "cheerleaders" gave me a good eye-rolling workout though.

Boot scoot boogie

So to try a new exercise I did the kickboxing workout that LauriAnn linked on her post.  It was a good one...but to get 20 more minutes in later that afternoon I did some scooter racing with my 6 year old.  The next day my quad and hamstring were sore on my stabilizing leg...and I'm thinking the soreness came from the scooter and not the kick boxing!  It was fun too!

Not a morning person...

I have never claimed to be a morning person.  I have a difficult time going to sleep and waking up.
So when I saw this article, this grabbed my attention '24 pro hacks to help anyone start working out in the morning'
It was a great read...with some good ideas to get motivated! I hope everyone has had a wonderful week!

Something NEW!!

When Steph issued this challenge last time I about croaked...Me try something new!!
It was my best challenge EVER!! I don't even know if I lost weight but I found something new.  Steph actually posted jessicasmithtv.com It was a Barre workout.
I now try to do a workout off this website every other day.  They are FREE!!!! FUN!!!! and some are only 5 minutes long.

Still Sweating

So this morning I tried this kickboxing workout on YouTube.  I am completely uncoordinated and have never done a workout like this before.  I really liked it!  It was intense, but easy to follow.  I highly recommend it!

Sunday, March 8, 2015

Well, Stephanie...

Stephanie asked how we keep ourselves motivated when the scale or measuring tape aren't showing us the progress we expect or want.  I have thought about this a little bit for myself.  I usually go 2 weeks without big results and then finally see some changes after 3 weeks.  Sometimes it is frustrating. First, I remind myself I am in it for the long haul, so I know eventually it will happen if I keep at it.  I also get excited by running faster and longer or lifting heavier weights.  I think about the progress I have made, in terms of the big picture.  I was basically sedentary until I took a marathon running class in college. Since that experience I have slowly gained in fitness (despite many set backs and regressions) and know have several "exercise" activities that I enjoy.  My kids are pretty active and I am glad that I can share some activities with them and make it part of a family lifestyle. Ultimately, I am on the right path.  My diet is better and better each year and my fitness level continues to improve.  I think creating these habits is a victory in itself.

Back

i missed blogging last week with some sort of illness.  If feels weird to blog again after a lot of time off.  Probably similar to taking a workout off...it just seems more difficult to get back to it than to just maintain consistency.  Ok.  On to the next week!

Green, Green, Green

Had a pretty good week. Planning an even better one. I plan to hit it hard and lose some weight!!!!  Good luck and good night.

sleep

I have a 9 month old baby and a four year old. The hardest part of this challenge for me is the sleep part. As much as I want to stay up half the night after they are in bed, and enjoy the oeCe and quiet, I've made it my goal to be in bed by 10 every night so there is plenty of time to get waken up by them and still get all my sleep points. Some nights are more challenging than others. like last night,my four year old climbed into bed with me (we were out of town on an air mattress) had a bad dream where she was fighting someone off so she hit me in the eye and then peed the bed. Since it was an air mattress, I woke up half covered in pee. Fun night, but got my sleep. Hopefully tonight is very less eventful.

Spring Break?

The thought of this week being called a "break" makes me smile. However, I have found through this challenge that having more energy makes my days a whole lot lighter. I'm thankful for renewed energy and the lifestyle change that this challenge has helped be accomplish. Whoohoo!

All money!!!!!

Ten more points! Chaching!!!!!! See ya all from the top of the medal podium! There is going to be a medal podium right?

I second that

I am feeling the exact same way as Stephanie...all this hard work is paying off but not quite as fast as I would like....

hello

Hello everyone! Hoping it's been a great week! I'm still trying to climb out of the pit I've been in! Hahaha! Good luck this next week!! We can do it!

la de da

I am ready to start this challenge over! I need a re-do!  I'm finally feeling excited and motivated and we are over 1/2 way done?!  I guess later is better than never. :)
I want to do a quick shout out to Steph- YOU ARE AMAZING!
I love all the videos you've made, you keep this challenge fun and entertaining, which can be really hard in a fitness challenge!  THANK YOU!

Sydney Mills

Things have gone ok over the last few weeks, but I really need to step my game to the end to see if I can get a few more pounds and inches off.  #gameface

Almost missed it!

I've been waiting all week for something interesting to blog about, and here it is Sunday and still have nothing interesting to share! So here I am blogging so I can get my points--don't want to miss out on those. I've just been plugging along, feeling stronger and healthier even though the scale and/or tape measure may not always agree.

On a completely unrelated note, I've been doing some soul searching this week, inspired by a friend who is studying for the GRE to go back to school. I am a great lover of books and have somewhat come to the conclusion that I might enjoy being a book editor someday. While my children are still little I want to be at home, but that doesn't mean I can't be taking steps now to making my goal a reality years down the road. Right now I'm looking at what additional education I might need to get a job in editing. I have a bachelor degree in psychology but probably need something in English to have any credibility. If any of you have any tips or tricks in the field I'd love to hear them!

Muscle Weight

I have joined Crossfit. They told me it was very normal to gain weight your first couple of weeks due to the muscle increase but it is hard to be working hard and seeing the scale stay the same or rise! So keep your heads high this next week and try to focus on how much healthier you are felling... not necessarily the scale.

Saturday, March 7, 2015

I'm going to see if I can't find my game face somewhere!

1 Measly Pound

This week I came at it with a vengeance.

I stuck to 1200-1300 calories a day, exercised 60 minutes, I cardioed, I strength trained, I got my 10,000 steps in, drank my water, and pretty much went all week without a sugary treat!  I was hoping this would be my jump start back into the game.  I was hoping for at least 3 pounds lost and a few inches here and there.  Well...I'm here to say I lost a pound, and no inches.  Trying hard to keep my game face on for next week, even if the results weren't quite what I was hoping for.

I think results are the best motivator for me, so how do you keep yourself going when you feel like you are not going anywhere fast?

Muscle vs. Fat

Image result for muscle vs. fat

This picture is kind of gross but it keeps things in perspective! Even though you might be exercising hard and strength training a lot and there isn't a huge loss on the scale, you are probably still losing inches. Fat takes up a lot more space!

Stiff Competition

Nice work everyone! I have been working hard not to miss any points, because we are vacationing at the end of the month and I am sure it will be quite difficult to fit in all of the sleep and food logging (beings we will be out in the sticks with no cell service). Now I am thinking I am going to have to plan long scenic trips to entertain everyone else while I catch a nap j/k. Way to keep things competitive though so I am not as tempted to slack off.

sinking

My head has NOT been in the game the last few days! I'm sinking and drowning and hoping I can pull myself out of this soon. I gotta get back on the band wagon and celebrate my successes instead of only seeing my failures. Good luck everyone.

What??

I had something good to post but I forgot!  I am so sick of Migraines!!  When I have them I think I can eat bad food...but it has been my personal goal not to!!! Clearly I also can't think!!! Or see! Or feel my fingers...but I'll live.

I am up for Steph's focus challenge.  I however am going to say six pounds in the next four weeks.  Last challenge I didn't lose the whole last month.  Not going to happen this time!

Y'all better watch out, because here I come!

Stephanie's goal for 10 pounds by the end of the challenge is lofty...and totally achievable.  It is my new goal to make sure she achieves it!

I have been very lazy during this challenge, enjoying too many sweets and avoiding too much exercise.  And yet, I've not had my weight or inches fall apart.  Pheww!

I'm going to push hard to the finish line and try to sneak off a few more pounds and few more inches off the mid-driff.  If I can just get rid of that last bit of belly, without sucking it in...I'll be happy.

A question

Hello fellow challengers!
Here's my question to all:  Of all the point categories in the challenge, which is the most difficult for you to earn the maximum number of points?  For me, the categories I usually lose points in are drinking 64 oz of water daily and getting 7 hours of sleep nightly (and I don't even have littles at home!)  One thing I love about this challenge is it's not just about losing weight, but about adopting good life habits and being more thoughtful about our choices.  Keep up the good work everyone!

I am loving all these one liners!

Ha ha...Most of us have all had a week...I am loving these one line posts...that is how I have felt this week! Just push through and survive!
I am finding myself slipping into old bad habits...I am so ready for the warm weather so I can change it up a bit.  I need some motivation! Ahh! I feel like I am constantly fighting myself!
Anyone else have the worst luck finding a healthy balance while nursing???  As soon as I cut down on calories my milk supply goes way down. Ugh..ugh...ugh...okay, I'm done complaining!
Have a great week!
