Intuitive Eating

I blogged about the book Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole in the last challenge, but I had a success related to one of the theories in the book.  Tribole asserts that sometimes giving in to our cravings actually helps us eat better overall.  If you constantly are avoiding a cookie or cupcake, Tribole says that many times you fufill that craving with something less satisfying, but more of it.  She says if you want to eat 12 Twizzlers, you should occasionally just do it.  Most times you will find that you quickly get tired of it and haven't eaten a bunch of unsatisfying calories that didn't sate your craving.

So, I caved at the grocery store and bought my toddler Lucky Charms.  The Lucky Charms started to haunt me, but I am pretty dedicated to the breakfast menu I already have (oatmeal, ha ha), so I decided not to eat them.  Finally, one morning I ate my breakfast and then TWO bowls of Lucky Charms.  I immediately berated myself.  But, at the end of the day, I realized I was still on target for my calorie count and I felt totally satisfied that day, which is not always the case.  Tribal was right.  I gave into the craving, didn't overcompensate for the desire with other foods, and now the Lucky Charms mystique is gone!
